The NATO spokesman reiterated that NATO had not yet made a political decision on inviting Ukraine or Georgia to join the alliance, but remained open to new members. "NATO is not going out to get new members, but our door is open to European democracies," he said.
"NATO is currently considering the admission of only one country, which is Croatia," Dmitry Rogozin said. "My partners are skeptical about the admission of Macedonia and Albania. There are no discussions at all about Ukraine and Georgia."
The unilateral declaration of independence by Kosovo will have a negative effect on Russia-NATO relations, Russia's envoy to the alliance said Friday. "This certainly makes dialogue difficult. There won't be a war or any mutual understanding and promotion of other projects due to our conflicting outlook," Dmitry Rogozin said
NATO should think about its possible transformation into a security system for the North of the world, but together with Russia. We have common problems, common values - why can't we live together? Why should we separate Ukraine, Georgia, the Baltic states and leave Russia alone, outside the bloc? We are allergic to such western scepticism, we don't understand it. Are we of a different sort? It encourages nationalism and isolationism within the country and it's quite dangerous.
Rogozin hopes that the Council would be able to launch a constructive dialogue in the military cooperation area and that on January 30 the sides will focus on the future relations between Russia and NATO. The Russian envoy also says that NATO sticks to its military-political structure even though it faces no direct or obvious military threats to its security. “There are some threats now facing all of us, threats that require more than just cannons and tanks to deal with,” Rogozin added
Rogozin began his work at the organization's HQ in Brussels on Monday. He gave Scheffer an official letter and during a meeting an inlaid war tomahawk, especially made in Russia. Rogozin said he hoped that the NATO secretary general would bury the hatchet as a sign of "putting an end to all conflicts between Russia and NATO."
Russia’s new ambassador to NATO Dmitry Rogozin says the consolidation of national security is his top priority. When talking with journalists he underscored, among others, that Russia will lift the moratorium on the CFE Treaty it set last month if the NATO countries ratify and strictly abide by the Treaty.
"As I was preparing to take up my new post, I was astonished at the disrespect for proprietary rights in the field of armaments," Dmitry Rogozin told a news conference on Thursday. "Copyright law should not be only confined to art and culture, but must also cover armaments," he said.
Rogozin, a former chairman of the lower house committee for foreign affairs, was earlier considered a pro-Kremlin politician and held the post of presidential envoy to the Kaliningrad Region, a Russian exclave between Poland and Lithuania. He also formerly led the nationalist bloc Rodina (Motherland)
"They [NATO countries] should understand that no one's security can be ensured to the detriment of others' safety," Rogozin told the Rossiiskaya Gazeta government daily. The envoy also said he would be faced with political, not diplomatic, tasks in his work, singling out as priorities the Conventional Forces in Europe (CFE) Treaty, Kosovo, Iran and Afghanistan
The politician, characterized by his colleagues as an experienced and flexible diplomat, has said that if appointed NATO envoy he would have to address "very important issues," including international terrorism and the status of Kosovo, adding that "the whole of Serbia is pinning its hopes on Russia."
